I used to work at a VW/Audi dealer.....all they do is put 87 in the cars....3.0's, 2.0's and turbo's.....First time I came back when I filled up a 1.8T with 93 oct. I got an earful about $1.50 a gallon vs. $1.30....LOL....

Go ahead and use 87.
While your at it, buy the wall-mart brand 10w 30 oil.
Use atf fluid for your power steering.
Use dot 3 brake fluid for your brakes.
and buy a fart-can muffler off ebay for your exhaust.

If its OK to run 87, WHY DOES AUDI RECCOMEND A MINIMUM 91 OCTANE?

and, WHY DONT YOU WANT TO FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURERS RECOMENDATIONS?

Using 87 octane is just bad advice people, bad advice. Follow the manufacturers reccomedation, and use at least 91 octane, because your engine runs a little higher compression than others, and pre-detonation is bad for your engine.

Sorry dude, but the worst that will happen is the engine will ping and throw a CEL. Ive run both, 87 and 93. I never once threw a CEL running 87. As far as manu., it says on the filler door that the lowest you can run in a B5 is 89, but 91 is recommended. On top of that, all gas isnt equal. For instance, you live in Ohio, you and I might be using 87 that is actually closer to 90 Oct. While someone in cali, may use 87 that is actually 87. God only knows what these gas companies use. For all we know, they could be 87 across the board and still charging more. Anyone ever test all three octanes at the pump? Probably not, but I would bet against the oil companies.

Well, you can run what you want.
I run 93 octane religiously, as I am chipped, and would not run anything else.
Just hope your knock sensor never fails, and your engine lasts a long time.

knock sensor is your first warning on weak mix but the ECU should compensate apart from modified cars

Youre chipped you dont really have any other option, considering your running higher boost. But still I would be more concerned about HOW MUCH is being injected to the air-fuel mix over the octane. As far a knocking, its not fully octane dependant. That is why I said "pinging" CEL, which would be a Knock code. Im not going to go into fuel, timing, ignition correlations, but its pretty unlikely that a STOCK 18t running 87 would ever have a problem under ideal conditions.
