Smile 95-96 a4 1.8 2o v starting problems

Hi there , i hope some one can help with this .
My audi will not start properly ,
when you turn the key the engine will fire but not run !!!!
it will do this for between 3-10 times then it will start
i have cleaned the throttle body changed the vac hoses and the ect sensor
all to no avail
i would be gratefull for any advice on this as the car is my lifeline and i cant afford to spend mega money on it , i am not an idiot when it comes to engines so i will tackle most problems myself
thanks for your help in advance

My guess would have been the coolant temp sensor...

Did this just start happening out of the blue? The car runs fine after it starts (doesn't die or sputter)? Any exhaust smoke after it finally starts?

I am wondering maybe the camshaft position sensor... Maybe the ignition module, bad coil pack or a bad spark plug...

Is this a manual or an auto?

when it has started it runs fine (you wouldnt know there was a problem ) there is no smoke from it on startup either , mmmmmm may run a little warm , but apart from that nothing at all untoward
