Default 96 A4 2.8L or 97 A4 1.8T ?

Hey Guys,
I just joined the forums to seek advice from fellow enthusiast about an A4 I might buy. Here are the options:

1. 1997 A4 1.8T FWD 85K miles Loaded, Dealer is asking $7450 and will provide some warranty

2. 1996 A4 2.8 70K miles, Loaded, A private party to buys and sells cars at his mechanic shop and is asking $6400

Obviously I am more inclined to option 2 but am worried if this guy is hiding something. I have not seen either car.
Also I drove a 1997 Audi 1.8T FWD today and was quite impressed with it. Then I drove a 1997 1.8T quattro and it sucked!! seemed like the compression ratio was bad or something as the comparative low end torqure to the FWD was lot less. Is that the case with quattro or was the car just messed up?

Also, what should i look or ask for to avoid high maintanence cost? I currently own a 2002 BMW 330i which i am selling tomorrow morning and using that money to invest in a condo so looking for a car around 7K.

Please advise,

Thanks in advace!!

if you don't like the quattro... the 4 rings just isn't your type of car brotha. really, the FWD is meant as a cheaper option of Audi... not as a preferred drivetrain. of course it's going to be slower off the line... it's powering a more complex drivetrain and twice the load... but... i would never touch a FWD audi.

also... what trannys are these?

Hey buddy,

That was part of my question......does the quattro have less or feel like less low end torque then the FWD because if not then the car i saw had something wrong and i suspect the latter!! this was on a 1.8T , a 1997 model!!

THanks,

hey, I currently own a 96 2.8 auto fwd and it is comfortable to drive but slow as sh*t. i also own a 97 1.8t quattro manual and it is a blast. As far as your question, yes the quattro will be a little slower because of all of the drivetrain components. However, go testdrive the fwd vs. the quattro in the rain and see the comparison. The quattro is the only way to go. If you are not buying a quattro, then imo, dont buy an audi. But that is just my two cents.
By the way, I am selling the 96 w/ 80k miles for 6200.
