Thanks,

You should be able to look in the owners manual of a 96 A4 and it will have a picture of what it looks like.. Speaking of keyless entry on a 96... Does anyone know if its possible to purchase one off of ebay (with Receiver) and plug and play?? Let me know.
Thanks
Thanks
but do all 96's have the wiring from the factory for it?? And then all you would need is to plug in the silver box and get some remotes? Just wondering because they pre wired stuff like a cd player.. let me know thanks
I'm not really sure. Just pull up the rear seat. It pops out with a little upward tug. You should either see the metal box or not. If not then there should be a wiring plug ready to go. I'm not sure if they were prewired or not. I'm sorta thinking, not.
I have the same car (96 a4 2.8 quattro) I have three silver boxes under my rear seat.
Which is it? They are all equally silver...
My Story:
I decided I wanted a keyfob (two button and panic) for remote entry.
I ordered one from the dealer using my VIN thinking at least one of the two key recode solutions would work.
None of the recoding options using one or two keys works.
This is just one of half a dozen sequences out there.

"You do need 2 keys. You must be able to lock the drivers door and have the red led alarm light next to the lock button blink. If it does not blink, the alarm does not know the door is closed and will not go into matching mode. Put one key in the ignition switch, turn on, do not start engine. Close the door, use 2nd key, turn door lock and hold in lock position for 10 seconds. Release key to neutral position.
Press a button on the remote, within 2 seconds press the same button again, the turn signal lights will flash,
this indicates your remote matches the car system and is now recognized. Unlock door remove key from ignition."
Nope.
"Insert spare key into ignition and switch on.
Manually lock the car door with your remote central locking key(the one you want to programme)
Press lock on the key. (The car should beep)
Now manually unlock the car door
Press unlock on the fob(Car should beep to confirm action)"
I've read some that say "hold both buttons down with key on and key in locked door"
Nope.
"hold door lock for four seconds until the armed light on dash begins blinking to ensure you're in enable mode".
Nope.
Since I have a 96, neither 35 central locks 0r 46 central conv per:
http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/car...ions/a4s4.html
Although the latter does toss a
"controller uses an unknown protocol - protocol keyword: 5fbc"
from vag when trying to connect to the 46 module.
So I:
1) don't know if I even have remote entry transceiver to use a remote keyfob
...The dealer has already sent me parts that didn't fit my car, so they have proven they can suck at what they're supposed to know and may have sent me a remote despite my car not being equipped.
2) Don't know how to make it recognize it if I do in fact have the module.
It seems the 96s are a special breed.

Update to this:
My local ( a province away) audi dealer sent me the wrong fob.
Actual part number for the 96 A4 is:
8D0-959-753-B
Programming procedure is:
key in ignition, accessory on but not running
second key (most locksmiths have this chipless blank btw) in door
lock door with outside key leaving key in door
press BOTH buttons on fob until door unlocks
Yer dun.
FYI
Fcc id: HC3B70000102
Two buttons: lock, unlock - no panic button.
Range is lame too, but I may have old stock battery.
Now you know.
Dealer said if you have central locking, you have remote transceiver as it's the same module in the 96.
