Default '96 A4 Quattro

well .....

Bought the car from a friend of a friend

Drove it a week

Somewhere along the way the fan came apart. Didn't run hot, nothing was amiss, just one day I went out and there was a white spot on the hood. Dang birds. Went to wash it off and ..... it's a dent from the inside with the paint flaked off. Pop the hood and I'm thinking to myself "self there's something missing ... doh the fan" I see a few blades down the bottom.

Get a new clutch. The old one was floppy, which I'm putting down to why the fan came apart. The back-n-forth movement fatigued the plastic.

anyway .....

Get a new fan to go with the new clutch .... 3 weeks ago. Ok - big nut to remove clutch, looks like the 1-1/4" wrench I don't have is needed. Get a new wrench set. Put shear pin through pulley, into slot and wrench on nut. Pull on wrench. Pull harder on wrench. Bend pin. once, twice, thrice. Dang it's tight. Make a strap wrench out of 3/16 cable threaded through the pulley. This'll get it .... nope.

Consult Audi store. Consult on-line. Consult a beer. Audi store says we're doing it right, and it's a right hand thread. On-line agrees. Beer tasted good as it's >95 here. Nothing works. WD40, specific penetrate, soak and .... nope.

Look at new clutch and notice threads look ..... left hand. doh. shear pin in slot and a tap on the wrench going ...... the ...... other ...... way. Off it came. 5 minutes and the new one is on.

Note made.

Notes
The Audi service dept. had it wrong. The Tech looked up the service manual and it did not say anything about left handed thread.

The nut did not have the marks on it to indicate it was a left handed thread.

The new clutch doesn't have the marks to indicate left handed thread. Correction - it didn't - it does now.
