96 Audi A4 2.8 Sedan
I am interested in buying a '96 Audi A4 2.8 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...;category=6003
As you see if has alot of money invested into the engine and the car itself but I can safely say I don't know enough about cars (let alone audis) to understand what he's talking about. If anyone can give me their input on this car I would greatly appreciate it.
thanks

Yea they can be troublesome but thats mainly due to age. Still, there are many 96s in the 200k range still running strong, it all depends on how well the previous owner(s) took care of it. For that price though you can find a 98 even a 99 with around the same miles. I say keep looking. Also have you considered a 1.8T?
I wouldn't mind the 1.8T it's jsut this A4 is the only Audi i found with reasonable mileage and price,
since my range is around 6k. I have to admit that I'm a novice car shopper as I'm buying my first one
so I'm kinda shooting blind folded. I just don't want to get myself into a car that's gonna be giving me troubles left and right.
I also don't know how to drive a stick car but if I were to find the right audi I would consider learning.

hell for 6k you could get a car thats actually AWD. personally your better off buying an audi with some miles on it that just had everything replaced. those usually seem to last. hell you want an audi like that ill sell you my 96 quattro so i can trade up to an avant. but really find something thats had the t-belt changed, wheel bearings and control arms as these are the real failure items. ive already done all these to my car and it cost me about 1500 and that with me doing most of the labor.also if you want reliability i highly suggest the 12v v6 since its such a basic engine, then 30v v6 just because its been reliable and then the 1.8t because its relable only to the point that you dont follow up on maintence.
what would you consider a decent mileage to be looking into. I'm also interested in this 1.8T http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...&cardist=3
or

but I havn't found out whether or not any parts have been replaced, but it does have some mileage racked on.

nothing over 120k miles id say, with the governor off in my 96 quattro and 150k on the clock i still was able to get my car up to 150MPH and on 3 occasions outrun adodge charger cop, 2 state troopers, and just recently almost outran a city cop but i got lost in a culdasac.
