Default 98 A4 2.8 quattro no reverse problem

the other day we washed the engine bay to clean the crud off the power steering area..

after letting it dry for 2 hours I now have "No Reverse"
the gear selector says Neutral when its placed in reverse

I have no engine/tranny codes

im currently in the process of pulling plugs and spring with electric
spray cleaner

I have done a **** ton of reading, other people having the same issue
but no one posting a fix

Has anyone ever encountered this and had success repairing

any and all help is much appreciated

I am able to put it in limp mode and the whole display is now lit,, but now in limp mode
the trans will shift in reverse

not in limp mode no reverse
in limp mode I have reverse

I am still going through related posts and all Im seeing is a ton guessing $$$$$

nah I wound up trading the beast for a 2000 Lincoln LS

but I suspect it was the neutral safety switch (its called something else too)
or the tcc under the passengers side floor area

good luck though
