Default Reverse Problem

Ok so its gotten below 20 degrees overnight lately and whenever I go to shift my 6 speed into reverse, it will usually grind a little but still go in. This only happens the first time I shift into reverse. Even if I shift into reverse, and not move the car, then put into neutral and shift into reverse again it wont do it the second time. Can anyone help me out. Is it just because its cold outside? I try and pump the clutch pedal a few times before shifting. I'm thinking about flushing the fluid this weekend to see if that fixes it. But any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Try this:

- Push in the clutch.
- Shift into 3rd (you could do 2nd or 1st or another gear but with the crappy 1st and 2nd synchros, 3rd is probably a better bet).
- Keep the clutch pressed
- Take out of 3rd and shift into reverse.

That should stop the gears from spinning before you engage reverse since (to my knowledge) there is no synchro on reverse in the S4 6 spd.

You can also try double clutching if the above steps don't work.

^ Ding we have a winner on that one, if i had to put my "cookies" in the jar im gonna go with what mr.meat said but cause i have looked into this and my s4 and few of my buddies... when ever we cant get into reverse we shift into 3rd and then slide back into reverse and it slides right in.

Try shifting in very slowly, and make sure you have the clutch pressed to the floor. I have this same problem, and this usually works for me.

Ok, thanks guys. Sounds like I shouldn't be too worried about it. It hasn't acted up lately. Thanks again.
