98 A4 Avant 2.8 Quattro 12v/30v Confusion
So my boy's shop just got a 98 Avant 2.8 Quattro and it has the 12v engine (code AFC). Based on the VIN, Carfax lists the car with the 30v, which is what I thought all the 98 Avants came with, and yes the VINs all match. Has anyone else seen/heard of this? Like I said, my understanding was that every 98 model-year Avant got the newer 2.8, but is it possible that the early 98's had the 12v instead and there aren't enough Avant owners paying attention?

It says AFC on a bar code on the side of a valve cover, then we took that cover off and it's got AFC again in front of the right cylinder head. Here's the VIN:

Also for what it's worth, here pics from a 97 2.8 12v and a 98 avant engine bay. Ours unquestionably matches the 97, even though this car is coming up 98 everywhere.

note the 5v on the side. thats 5 valves per cylinder. its a 6 cylinder car so 5x6=30. its a 30v. the 12v has 2 valves per cylinder. 2x6=12
notice on the 97 12v there is no 5v. thats cuz there are only 2v per cylinder
the 98 is defintely a 30v. i think u have the codes messed up
