Default 99 1.8t, timing belt?

i was slowing down coming up to a stop light today and all of a sudden the rpms shot up above 3500 and then the car just died. when i turned the key the engine turned over but didnt start and you can hear what sounds like a belt salpping against ****. the sound is coming from the front of the engine compartment near the other belts which makes me think timing belt. but i bought it from a dealership 2 months ago and they said they changed the timing belt when they recieved the car so either they lied, did a crappy job, or its something else. by the way, thereare 118000miles on it, 113 when i bought it.

Take off the upper timing belt cover (snaps in) and have some one crank over the engine, if the cam pulley doesn't turn the belt is snapped. Tow it back to the dealer you bought it from andshow proof of purchase and repair information. They have to cover the cylinder head repair and timing belt install because it was just done.

the thing is, i go to school in rhode island, but live in southern ct so i had it towed to the garage my friend and the tow driver recomended (the tow driver was an audi owner, which was comforting).but since i dont know the garage, i want to make sure they know what they're doing as well as make sure they dont rip me off.does anyone have a suggestion on what it sounds like based on what happened?

p.s. the warranty from the dealership (used car dealership) was only 3000 miles so i'm sol, but im hoping the guy will realize he sucks if it is the timing belt and will reimburse me

this is a risky one to answer as I also agree with auditech79 and the danger part is asking you if the engine cranks because in doing that you could do more damage trying so at least check the belt first

just called the mechanic and he said without pulling it apart he can tell its the timing belt AND the cylinder head, so i get a new timing belt and a cylinder head rebuild. since he hasnt opened it up yet though, he cant tell how old the belt is but either way im gonna be having a chat with the dealership.im hoping he was just being pescimistic with the cylinder head but ill find out tomorrow. thank you avant and auditech for responding though and ill repost when i find out more
