Did a search first and couldn't find what I was looking for. What common problems are there with the 2.8 A4? My buddy is looking at getting one for a DD of sorts. Nothing to fancy, he doesn't want to spend a lot so he found one with 130k miles. I don't know much about the 2.8's so any info would help.

Same common problems as all A4s, probably less. Apart from the timing belt, control arms after 100k, and bosch abs module its a reliable motor. With that mileage make sure there aren't any leaks and all the electronics work. It'll be a good DD, don't expect any S4-like power though.

 

the big problems with that motor, Timing belt (just change it), heater hoses, And a very annoying lack of upgrade parts for it. Other wise I'm coming up on 160k on my 2.8. Still runs strong.
