A4 B5 front component speaker UPGRADE project (non-bose)
Well after driving around with a blownfront speaker in my new daily driver, I decided it was time to replace the entire system if I was going to have to fix the speaker issue. So I figured, why not get a clean head unit, and upgrade the speakers to 5.25" from the factory 4" (which some members have seemed to do succesfully), amplify the front channels and a sub with a high power Alpine 4 channel amp. One week of research and planning produced an overnight shipment from Crutchfield for this weekend. I had 3 sets of helping hands and the hopes of acoustical bliss before the weekend was over.....
What I can say is the Audi A4 is a b*tch to work on. We customfabricatedsomethin wooden spacer brackets for the 5.25" Infinity reference woofer to clear the 4" hole (to preventthe butyl rubber surroundsfrom making contact to the 4" circle). We did a test of the sound of the speakeron the door and it sounded like **** literally..prolly due tovibrations of the bracket...Then we took Audiworld.com board member, headshok2002's suggestion of using dynamat which solved the poor sound and early distortion; we got bass response now and much less distortion!
Then we proceeded to place the door panels back onto the door..and what do you know...the area where the 5.25 woofer and speaker adapter reside...it won't clear the inner metal of the DOOR near the edge. We spent the whole weekend on this project and we're getting nowhere.
I have a 1999 Audi A4 Non Bose (symphony) version of the stereo. Will the board members who have successfully installed 5.25" components please speak up? I've done countless searches with 'SPEAKER ADAPTER' and 'SPEAKER BRACKET' in the search engine and not finding anything dead-on where I replicate (i.e. a writeup). The only thing i hear is..yeah man..i heard so and so did it..and "yes I fit in some 5.25"...but no specific directions/guidance on what to do. The closest I saw was a UK manufacturer (nexxia) who produced some brackets and it took one guy 2 months to receive his...I need a quicker fix than that.
I would really appreciate any input regarding this...it shouldn't be this hard should it?
The entire car is torn apart right now...I need your help folks.
Thanks in advance

this may seem like it's counter-productive, but why not just stay with a 4" speaker? a high-end 4" will still produce pretty good sound, and you'd have a lot less headaches mounting it.
The 4" speaker would not be sufficient for our sound goals...I would like to go with the biggest one possible. Thanks everyone...I have found my answers at http://www.audizine.com Very informative site with lots of threads that detail writeups including detailed photos and descriptions! If anyone needs help, go there and do a search for "speaker 5.25"
Thanks again, folks. =)
