Default A4 / B6 Turbo Replacements

This is a long post, but with lots of data....

I have been searching and searching for information on forums and recommended tuner sites. I have read quite a bit, but the only turbos for the B6 I can find are Neuspeed and Garrett products. AWE, APR, and ATP don't have anything yet.

Neuspeed Product Description (so new it is not even listed under the primary B6 parts section):

Super K04: http://www.neuspeed.com/news/news_vi...uro&news_id=45

Price: $2500

Garrett Product Description:

http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...ngitudinal.htm

GT28R Turbo Upgrade . The Garrett Exclusive Ball Bearing Turbo will give you Unbeatable Response, Efficiency, and Durability. Absence of a Thrust Bearing Eliminates Failures at Elevated Boost Levels
Direct Bolt-on with no engine mods
3-4 hour install, not including ECU reprogramming time
Price includes upgrade of ECU

Performance Comparison
Stock
135whp @ 5300rpm / Torque 146lbƒ· ft @ 2200rpm
Garrett Turbo Kit
215whp @ 5400 rpm / Torque 215lbƒ· ft @ 5200 rpm

Price: $1878

I did find this link on the Forum: https://www.audiforums.com/m_36998/m...t/tm.htm#36998. It seems to suggest a new turbo kit from AWE with the Garrett turbo is on the way.

AWE Product Description (not yet available):

Stage 1: Garrett GT28R, stock exhaust manifold and intercooler used. Hi flow injectors (edit: we're trying to keep that spec secret, as we spent a lot of time researching injectors), metal core catalyst, MAF, all install hardware and gaskets, proprietary GIAC chip programming. In field testing at this point. ~223 all wheel hp on our Mustang dyno. A FMIC will be optional, and should yield ~240 all wheel hp when the chip is finalized. The dyno sheet shown here is this configuration before chip optimization. Translates to ~290 crank hp.

Price: $3599 (estimate without intercooler)

APR says they have a Stage III kit "coming soon"

APR Product Description (not yet available):

APR Investment Cast Inconel Exhaust Manifold
Garrett/Allied Signal Ballistic Series Ball-Bearing Turbocharger
APR High Flow Catalytic Converter
APR Custom Cast Urethane and Silicone Intake Hoses
APR High Flow Fuel Injectors
All Associate Plumbing and Hardware

Price: $4500 (pricing from the B5 kit)

I was thinking about a Garrett product, because they manufacture the turbos used in the Audi R8. The R8 is arguably the best sportscar of its time with an awesome winning (and reliability) history. There has to be something said for race proven parts (or at least engineering). Although, I'm not totally sure if there is a corellation between Garrett's race parts and retail parts.

Based on the multiplier (1.28 for Crank HP) mentioned on this site, the Garrett product without all the extra schtick will produce 275HP. Not too mention, they are stating this is a "Direct Bolt-on with no engine mods". If a stand alone Chip/ECU upgrade is going to cost around $500, why not go for the Garrett Model from Garrett for an addt'l $1400???? With the money saved in comparison to the other packages, I could buy a necessary hi-flow exhaust system.

My primary concern is getting bang for my buck w/o having to replace major components in a couple years. But I like power as much as the next guy (S4 is out of my reach). At what point HP-wise would you have to start considering a stronger clutch? concerned about damaging the transmission? Or failure of other parts?

I'm not much of a gear head, but I am slowly learning. Any suggestions? Comments? If you read all of this and still feel inclined to help, thank you....

Default RE: A4 / B6 Turbo Replacements

Neuspeed no longer sells the SK04 kit, just the K04 turbo upgrade. From my understanding, thats been pretty reliable. APR just released their Stage III+ today, which puts down about 320whp on 93 octane! I know GIAC has been doing some testing and I've even seen/heard of a few prototype kits but none on the market yet. REVO is the other tuner that also has turbo upgrade software for the B6.

On the more expensive side, you can also go with MTM or Dahlback, both of which have very good K04 kits. If you decide to go with the Neuspeed kit, let me know. We carry it at ModSport.com.
