Its a factory 4, turned 90 degrees clockwise.

I think I figured it out, that's a British A4 trunk, and the 4 is backwards because they drive on the wrong side of the road!

 

My old 2.8 had a backwards 4 also. It was a 96 A4 and I am pretty sure that it was debadged then they were replaced because they were on the lower part of the trunk like the newer A4's but the 4 was backwards on mine as well.
