A4: good first car?
audi is the ****...I bought an older audi with decent mileage (1998 a4 1.8tqm w/ 87k on clock)...The car cost me 6500 cash and then I put another 2k into it for repairs at dealer (such as tb and a few gaskets)...so, for 85oo dollars i have an amazing luxury car and I have put 13K on it since and the car has been heaven...I would just let your parents know ahead of time that you want a car that can become a financial burden if not taken care of...if you follow scheduled maintenance you will have no major/ unexpected problems...Besides an oil/filter change every couple months (40$ diy) there really isn't much to owning an audi, and the motors are happy to pass right by the 200k mile-line...I'd say it would be an amazing first car...my first was a 1989 vw jetta (the only fwd car i love, cuz it was my first)...go for an audi! gl!
i love my audi and it is my first car. 17 years old here. yes the upkeep is expensive but its not everyday so its not that big of a deal. yes toyotas are cheaper but the quality of an audi is so much better and once you drive and own an audi you will love it too and you wont want anyone to touch it. plus with quattro, 6 cds in the back. almost good power and even better with a chip. Plus you get all the attention you need "from the right people" if you understad where i am comming from.
and under 20K!!! my audi was 9,000. a pretty good deal yes?

If you get a 2.8 the upkeep will be less. technically I drove my sisters Mitsubishi Galant for a year before I got my Audi, but I consider the Audi my first car. It is somewhat costly if you have to replace items like a rear bumper, but they arn't too bad IMO. Subie's are some good cars and the engines will last a while. In the end, I would get something that if you hit something, or something hits you, it won't be the end of the world.
I started out on a porsche 914, after learning how to drive in a Porsche 944 turbo race car...
after a year I put a v8 sbc in my 914.....
THEN again, im a good driver with racing experience, and I keep it on the track so my opinion is slightly biast but.....
I'd say go for it! Get an early b5 2.8 quattro for around 6-7k do all the maintence yourself (Great way to start car ownership is assume everything is fixable yourself.. It'll teach you responsiblity...because damn it, you dont want to be changing the clutch all the time... or blowing belts... or whatnot..)
Be responsible. When your driving, in your head you need to look at ever possible car that can hit you, and be aware of their actions... They are all trying to kill you (or at least that should be your mindset for deffensive driving). Just a little tip..
