Notice it every other day or so, I am driving with no notice of any sounds (could just be muffled by sound resitant material) but when I stop (last night at my girlfriends) get out of the car with the engine still running i hear not just the normal engine sound, it makes a higher pitched whine, like it is being worked a little (doesnt sound bad or anything). My thought is maybe it is the fan cooling down the engine because it does stop after about 20-30 seconds (maybe it is switching to coolant) (engine still idle, no rev)but just wanted to make sure since my next service date is comming up.

I also notice sometimes a little squeeky sound (goes up and down, like with the spinning of wheels just a bit slower it seems) doesnt suond that bad and i dont think anyone else has noticed but any ideas?? I usually notice when I am off the pedal just coasting 25-35 mph and only occassionally!

my 97 1.8TQ makes the same "squeek" at idle, but only when the A/C is on. what year/engine is yours?

 

Did you have your a/c on? I'm thinking it's the compressor fan you are hearing; it's normal. Sounds like jet engine right?

 

well my suggestiong would be spray wd40 on where ur pulleys turn. then get sum prestone belt dressing and spray where the pulley makes contact with the belt. do that to both belts. if the sound isn't rly loud but sounds like a fan that moves alot of air then i think it's ur fan.

 

Yes My AC was probably on, I will check that next time. I think that is probably what it is because yes, it sounds like a jet engine . Good now im not too woried.

I have a 2003 A4 1.8T and I had the same problem about six months ago. I took the car to my mechanic and it turns out that I needed a new fuel pump. It was a high pitched hum that was only noticeble at idle and when coasting at low speeds. You might want to have that checked out.
