A4 Technical questions.
Hey my name is Al and i am here b/c i may get an A4... damn sounds like i am at an AA meating HAHA.
Anyway, here is the deal. Friend of a friend has a 98 1.8T(not quatro) Manual with a blown engine that he's trying to get rid of...from what i heard timing belt took a dump but it may be significantly worse. Asking price is 2.5k...i think ican get it down to 2k. I tried to price an engine and didnt have much luck...well i did, but prices were not exactly sattisfactory. An average was 1.2k and i dont even know if that comes with Acc. or Trubo. (pricing an engine since i have yet too look at the car and determine the damage. I am also considering rebuilding the engine but taht all depends what really happend to it.)
Anyone here rebuilt(themselfs) their 1.8t? If so share the expenses with me. I am a Nissan guy and work at Jap import shop so i have absolutely no idea how much more expensive german parts are (i am sure they are).Last engine i built for my car cost me roughly 2k . Before anybody talks labor cost...thats all free to me ... well minus my own time. I'd swap the engine over the weekend at work.
Whats all this about electrical problems i always hear with VW/Audis? Specificly what i'd like to know if this is with electrical units/motors/relays/bulbs OR is its actual wiring problems where harness does not last, corodes, shorts out?
I am not sure if its Quattro but if it is are there any issues with AWD in audis thats common?
ANy input you guys can give me would be great. I am of a European descent so i've always wanted something German.[sm=smiley16.gif]
PS i am not sure on the milege but its lil over 100k. but will be going to look at it tomorrow.

Hi Al, welcome to the forum.. it might as well be AA.. or AFA, because we are all pretty addicted.. What are you looking for in the long run with an Audi.. Are you looking for something to mod the hell out of, or are you looking for a commuter?? If your looking for a commuter that is reliable as all hell, then I would reccomend the 2.8L A4 you can pick one up for around the same price as this A4 after you put in a new engine. Plus you will be able to shop around and get one in a color that you like, that has Quattro. (Trust me you want Quattro) If your looking at building one hell of a mean car then you are at a good spot, because you will be able to build the motor up, while doing the rebuild, but then again.. it would suck to have a really fast car w/o traction.. (you really should get a Quattro) so all in all I dont see this being the best bet unless you really want this car, and you can find a cheap engine.
Ok I just re-read your post.. your not sure if its Quattro or not.. I hope it is, in that case.. def jump on that.. you cant go wrong then!
Because you will have reliability with the option to mod if you like.

I am looking for a daily driver(and a winter car since i may go to Minesota for school and my 240 aint **** in the snow) so i can store my 240 in the garage BUT the way i am i will end up at very least modifiying the suspention and turning up the boost a bit. I got the mod bug hehe, been infected 4 years cant get rid of it hehe.
You mentioned lack of traction in FWD model.....i take it there is no LSD from factory?

I mention lack of traction if your going to be putting out a lot of power after you finish modding.. if you have Quattro, you wont be dissappointed at all and will have awesome take offs
