Default A4 Timing Belt

Hi, I'm new here! I have an A4, 1,8litre 1995MY.

The cambelt has failed, and she won't start. What am I looking at to repair, please?
New valves, or
New Head, or
New Engine.

Any advice appreiciated

Cheers.

Find an Independent Mechanic. You'll probably need another head.

it all depends on what happened man, its possible that not too much damage occured but at the most your gunna need head work done and a new TB

depends on how mechanically minded you are ( some new valves/timing belt/tensioner ) to find a replacement cylinder head would be nice and simple but still you need a new belt and tensioner and the tensioner is probably the cause

Thanks for the response guys. I was worried (as I had heard rumours) that the valves can punch their way through the piston crowns.

If it is just a matter of replacing the valves (and presumably guides if they have suffered) then I'll compare that with the cost of a new head. I'll pull the head off on Friday afternoon and check it out. I have been pricing up engines in case that was the answer.

My only other experience with Volkswagen-Audi was a week of pain while I changed an inlet manifold gasket on a friends Golf. (I didn't realise the head was supposed to come off to do it!) What are Audi like to work on?

TB

very rare for the valve to punch through the pistons or even damage the guides, many would say skim the head but I disagree as long as its removed right the first time ( same as putting it back on ) the torque sequence is important on the removal as much as on refitting, I have the specs if required

Blimey - I've had this a year and no progress!

Well, I popped the head off (needed to buy an XZN tool to do it) Valves creamed, pistons look OK - couldn't even see a ding in them so I bought a second hand head.

Got all the bits but the headbolts are different !

Anyone know what the tool is, GSF are trying to sell me a 9mm RIBE but it rattles about in them like you wouldn't believe.

The 10mm is too big! Can you get 9,5mm RIBE? I am reluctant to us a tool that feels wrong.[/align]
