So here is the deal. this is going to be my first car (that I can drive on the streets) In France my mom's friend used to have alot of land and alot of toys (rally cars, dirt bikes, quads, ect) and didnt have a problem with a 12 year old driving them. So I grew up driving a manual Audi Quatro pretty hard since I was 12.

Now im in LA and I need a car. I love the style of the Audi A4/S4/RS4 in a perfec world I would be able to find a 1999-2001 Audi S4 Avant in manual unfortunalty I can't find that. the Sedan S4 is pretty easy to find in Sedan version but I really like the Avant. the Avant is pretty easily available in the A4 version but I would be losing the performance upgrades that I really like.

so performance wise is the S4 really that much better where I should get the Sedan even though I really prefer the style of the wagon or is the A4 wagon pretty close to the S4.

or even better can anyone point me in the direction of an S4 Avant (B5)? my budget is around $15,000 and I would prefer manual but can settle for Automatic/tiptronic.

I am a photographer, Ski, and snowboard, and will eventually be taking pictures of those sports so the Avant would definitly help me carry all my equipment.

 

The insurance, upgrade cost, and repair cost of a S4 is going to be huge. Not to mention for that $15k your going to be looking at a older car that needs it. Your really better off finding a a4 avant (which you seem to really want) for about $10-13k and spend the remainder for fixing any possible problems and upgrades. You can make a a4 pretty fast with a lot less than a s4. But the s4 will always when out.

 

yes, the S4 will be much better in terms of performance. You have to remember that maintainance on the S4 will be pretty expensive. Im assuming you are under 18 years old or around that, which would make your insurance prices insane. Sounds like with your budget and your like of avants, you should go with the 1.8T avant. They are very modable and easier to obtain for a cheap price.

 

Go with the a4! Spend the cash on a b6 avant, much better looking then the b5 avant if you ask me. Plus your getting involved in the a4 world, where tuning is more realistic.

for 15k you can get a nice S4. get the s4 man, the suspension/performance/styling is on a different level.

 

You can find an s4 avant, they're out there. Try craigslist.

i would get the a4 avant and go bt, if you want s4 performance, and also you will be looking at an old s4 with high mileage.... time for turbo upgrade/change...... you are looking at turbos plus labor of 1500...there is a nice s4 avant for sale on ebay, but they want way too much for it, or there is one in town here(missouri) that is a tip car, they want 19grand for it with relatively low miles

 

I'd go with the S4 if you can afford maintenance
