A4 which year is best?
Hello...noob here. First post
Anyway, I'm looking to get an Audi A4 pretty soon, like within the month.
I checked my friend's 99 or 2000(?) A4 V6 2.8(?) and he's loving it. He said that he got hit from behind rather hard and nothing happened to his bumper! It was round and straight except a little paint chipped off. He then said that the car that hit him was messed up! So that ofcourse sold me.
Anyway, I wanted to know what year would be the best to get becuase my friend said to get a car between the years of 1998.5-1999 because they were right in the middle of the conversion.
I kind of understand but I've been reading up on all the models from 96-2001 and it seems like newer models have better body designs and sweeter interiors. But the drivetrain, suspension, and everything else under the hood is about the same.
Right now I have a chance to pick up an '96 A4 2.8L Quattro 115,000miles, they're asking for $5,300 and it looks cherry. Should I????
Any help to decide would be so much appreciated. Thanks!

RE: A4 which year is best?
$5300 sound like a good deal to me. if you want to mod it though a 1.8t would be better as anyone would tell you. as for the year it all kind of depends on what you like, how much you want to spend, and what extent of modding you want to do.

Let's see, my budget is about $5k. That's why I'm looking cars like this.
I want to mod a little bit but not planning to do too much. Probably CAI ofcourse but minimal modding mainly bolt-on stuff. It's going to be my only car so I'll be driving this full-time. And it looks like she is moving away next month so she needs to get rid of it prior to moving. Would this A4 V6 2.8L Quattro problematic? Something I should know? Pick it up and resell later?
Here's some pics.

RE: A4 which year is best?
I bought my '97 1.8TQMS for $5000 with 82,000 miles. It runs perfect with no problems. I personally think you can find a better deal. Also, think hard about which engine you want, because many people settle for what they find first, and then kick themselves later (I did when I had my 2.8 12v). <-- just search "1.8T vs 2.8" or something like that.

RE: A4 which year is best?
there are basically no mods for the 96 2.8, that engine is a 12valve, if you pick up a 98 or newer 2.8 they are all 30valves (5 valves per cylinder)
If you want something you can put a little mod money into then get a 1.8T, the 2.8's have no mods unless you supercharge them for a cost of roughly 5,000
Shop around some more. See if you can find a 1.8T or something slightly newer even if you have to save some more money and put off the purchase. This way you will have more time to understand the differences of the years, and what it is that you are really after.
