Default Airbag DTC 00588

Airbag light came on. Got the following code:

00588 Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95)
32-10 Resistence to High Intermittent

Cleared code and light goes off for the weekend. Going to work this morning, I go over some rough road filled with potholes and the airbag light comes on again. I'm thinking I might have a loose connection. But which and where? Any ideas.

One other odd thing is that when I press to honk the horn, the steering wheel area under the airbag sounds like an old bed with bad springs. Coincidence, or connected, to the airbag light coming on?

The car is a 1996 A4 without side airbags. Thanks for the help.

You don't have side airbags, so yeah I'd bet you have a loose connection in the steering bag.

Here is the Bentley diagram (I left it big so you can see it) for removing removing the bag on MY up to 98.

Thanks for the reply and Bentley diagram. Should it be that the connections at the bag are ok, are there other connections that I should check, (and where are they located)? Appreciate the help.

if the connections are ok, then I would assume it is the fault of the sensor (maybe a connection there or possibly the sensor is defective)

The sensor (a small steel box) is behind the Climate Control panel in the center console I think.

Remember to always disconnect your battery when working with airbags or any other electronics inthe car.

Do you have the site where you found this diagram?? I'm looking for a diagram of removal, etc. for the passenger side, dash mounted airbag for a 98 A4. Apparently, the airbag may not have been re-installed correctly after the vehicle sustained damage from a collision when it had around 8,000 miles. I purchased the vehicle from the original owner now with 97,000 miles. He had indicated that the cover would come ajar but now it pop completely open in front and won't stay shut. It appears that it is binding on the air bag itself in the center. I called dealership but bodyshop won't take care of it. Says it needs to be looked at by the service department.

Also do you know if this would trigger the air bag light. It wasn't coming on when I purchased the car but know since the air bag cover is open in front, the light stays on all the time.

Thanks!

Ray
