Default Annoying vibration

I have this annoying vibration in my 1997 A4 2.6 auto.
I only comes in at certain rpm's -- 800 (idle), 1300 & about 2000 rpm.
There is a noise to it as well but very low, it's maily a vibration felt through the seat
and pedals. I have had some mechanics look at it and say that it's a heat shield problem
though thier efforts to reduce or eliminate the vibration have failed. Then again
would a loose heat shield produce such vibration as opposed to just noise??
Listening to the engine gives no clues as it seems to be coming from down lower.
Can anyone please help??

HEAT SHIELD??? I doubt it, probly a motor mount.

the snub mount on our cars is known for being flimsy

Put the car in drive and brake torque it. One foot on the gas and the other on the brake. Use the e brake also for safetys sake. Then watch the motor. If it moves alot you have bad mounts.
