Default Any way to test if an ABS sensor is good or false?

1999 avant 1.8T manual transmission awd

ABS light is on when the car was bought. I am tring to fix it today.

The code is

00290 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor: Rear Left (G46)
35-00 - -

I took the sensor off, cleaned and reinstalled it. Then I cleaned the
code. The light came on within one minute of drive. The code is the
same as before.

It seems that the sensor is definitely bad. But I found traces that
the previous owner seems have replaced it, and the sensor appears
good looking (it was not dirty indeed).

I thinked to split the rear left anf right sensors for a test. But I found that
the two sensors are different. So I did not rush to do so.

Any way to check the sensor? I have unmounted it from the vehicle.
