i have a 1998.5 with the 1.8t motor. today when i went to start it up it started and idled fine BUT the transmission isnt engaging or barely engaging. The engine will just rev instead of actually moving. the wierd thing is that the car drove perfectly yesterday and when i went to start it up today it just didnt work. Has anyone has this happen to them and if so what was it?

 

check transmission oil, you would have to find scanner that reads transmission codes if you wanna try to fix it yourself

On the same boat here... I have a 2003 1.8t fwd 63000 miles.... same problem... started it up fine this morning and when i put it in drive it wouldn’t move until I hit the gas and got the rpms up to 1100.. Also the cluster PRND would flash on and off... also heard a slight tick in the trans...(which I heard last night on the way home) just hoping its not the trans.

 

i think it might be but im still new to working on cars so im not exactly sure. is it possible for the tranny to just blow while it was sitting over night?

 

i think it could be the temperature of the trans...

 

did you race or drive it hard the night before?

 

your lit or blinking “PRND” trying to say “Hello” “I have a code for you” find a scanner asap

 

the car was driven home normally and in light traffic for a couple minutes. also there are no lights that have turned on.
