What kind of titles did these cars have? If they were salvaged/totaled cars, then the prices sound right. Salvage cars have no value except the low prices some are willing to pay.

I've been to Manheim Auctions in LA. Those were probably just saw the starting bids you saw. I don't know about the '99 but an '03 A4 1.8T quattro with 40K would go for anywhere between $13k-17k here in LA at the Manheim auction. I've been to the last four looking for an '02-'05.
Well, I almost jumped to saying "OMFG HURRY AND BUY BOTH!" but you have to realize it is an Auction and those cars SHOULD be going for well over those prices. If you could get those cars at those figures then there is no god.
