im thinking of raising the $400 to do it, but in the end you have to give up your coin tray and your cig lighter
plus im still trying to think of how much it would cost to get everything

Lol. You don't have to take out your entire dash to house a 7" monitor in it. I could have fit the avic z1 in mine easily, just get a 20$ dash kit from circuit city. I work at one, and they look sick as hell when they're done. No need to give up the cig lighter and coin tray.
ugcpower.com - this was for a full computer install, not simply just an aftermarket screen. Back when that dash bezel was made, there were foldout screens available, but not foldout "touchscreens". This was made to accomodate a computer, custom software and anything else that the user wanted to add.
I'm pretty sure I know who fabricated that dash. We were a small group doing that mod back then on Audiworld.
Its the same thing I did to my 98.5 A4...
This will show you exactly how its done...
Brrman's 1998 Carputer Install
I have this done in my 2000 avant as well, though it has different dash style...
Here's a pic of the avant's car computer

Understandable. I work at Circuit City in the car audio section. (Wouldn't have it any other way lol.) I've pondered the idea of adding a computer as well. However, you can always get an aftermarket navigation system, ie the avic z1, and run a harddrive through the bus port with a aux out plug. You'd still retain the touchscreen, and as for software programming, I'm sure you'd be able to run it through the nav unit, because it would be running completely off the external harddrive instead of its own internal HD. I haven't tested it yet, but will be probably very soon. I'll let you know how it works out, because I wanted something that wouldn't be too complicated with the dash. The general consensus at work is that you could definitely make it work with an aftermarket 7" touchscreen easily, but it would take some work to get it to work with an actual radio/nav or even am/fm/dvd unit. In any case, I'm not really sure you'd have to replace the dash to that extent.

I guess I'm a simple guy...all I really need is a CD player...FM radio optional. But that's just me.

Lol, bring your car to the Freehold Circuit City and you can get some options.

And I run an FM usb receiver from the computer and USB2 DVD drive when I need it.
The cool thing about the computer is that I can use it to browse the internet by hooking to my cell phone.
A friend of mine actually has a dvd Pioneer unit in his subie and its great - I may even go that direction in the future because the novelty of the computer has worn off after a few years with it (in several versions). All I really need is a DVD full of music and Nav.
