Beyond ridiculous!!!
I pulled 16hour day in ER yesterday, on the way home, my friend (custom turbo fabricator, mad scientist and VW tech and also 1.8TQ owner) calls me up to see if I had any juice left in me to tackle the busted head last night – sure, why not…
So we started at 23:00 or so… At 6:00 this morning, everything is apart, head is off, valves are pressed out, changed the water pump, thermostat, fan switch, etc:

When the we removed the front core support and had a glance of what’s really caused the mess with the timing belt – I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything this ridiculous in my life!!! Car had an original owner until 78k miles with all service records from the dealer in NOVA. After that – when the timing belt was changed at some local ******* redneck saloon, not sure wtf were those morons thinking, because the TB tensioner was “refabricated” to look as such (now removed from the car):[sm=badbadbad.gif][sm=badbadbad.gif][sm=badbadbad.gif]

How you like them apples? WTF??? Welded, new “custom” brackets made… This type of engineering really pisses me off! Why even bother trying to work on the car with these skills, should just go ahead and operate the junk crusher!
Ok, now that I’m done bitching, here is what some of my valves look like:

There appears to be no damage to the head, all the parts have arrived to complete the work, jut need to order valves (doing it tomorrow, Ferrea forged stainless pieces), now that I see the extent of the damage. Once in – head goes for a nice bath and machine work to the shop and reassembly begins
D
P.S. Many thanks for the info found on this site, very very helpful! This is the page we used as a “visual” reference for disassembly http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng35.shtml dead on (other than fan wiring removal and turbo piping)

That is the very most f-ed up engineering I have ever seen. Anyone know of a cheaper deal than $280 for the kit that comes with the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, belts, thermostat, gaskets? Thats the best deal Ive seen at ECStuning er somthing.
