Black out grill on a laser red b5?
Yeah, come to think of it... I noticed my grill is pretty chipped already. I will do it over again in summer using the same paint, just do a better job prepping it... if it doesn't work, I'll try a different paint. How is the duplicolour for chipping? I used a lot of clear, sort of surprised to see how much had chipped... but yeah. Prep is likely to blame.
Yeah this time I'll do it properly... I'm going to sand the hell out of it... prime it... sand it... base, clear clear clear! haha :P
I never sanded it at all, after priming last time... so it has a textured look. I actually liked the texture once it was on the car.. but yeah, not next time.

ok so:
do i take the whole grill out or can i just take the chrome part off without pulling the whole thing out?
then i sand it
prime it (how many coats?)
wait overnight
sand it
4 coats of paint
3 coats of clearcoat
is that about it?

You have to take the whole grill out.
And I can't remember how many coats... Just make sure you get the primer on, sand that... let it dry overnight... yeah your plan should work. 4 coats of base seems like it may be excessive, but who knows!

Take the whole thing out. Careful not to break too many clips. I used some big, wide pliers and a very small amount of pressure to pop the first couple out.
Then sand the chrome part. The rings come out if you don't want to color them, otherwise sand them, too. The more you sand the better the paint will stay.
I did three coats of primer, then three coats of Rustoleum ****-can black. Then a coat of clear, and three coats of clear over the red-painted "quattro" badge." That's my favorite part of my car, I think. Except the brakes.
Thanks, headshok. I'm still jealous of your wheels. I think I'll make a run at the January or February ROTM after I get my super special secret surprise wheels. Hopefully.
