A lot of guys are going to the steering column display - I can't get to like it, but to each his own right?
One peopular style of HUD works by projecting a display from a unit placed on the dash, onto a piece of reflective (yet still transparent) material thats on the windshield. So the display is basically on your windshield.

Imolas4, the only thing the gauge obstrcts is my odometer, which i dont like looking at anyway! (It says 78XXX miles) Up and to the right of my steering wheel is my S-afcII (the ecu tricker) that ive been procelytizing. Above that is my old radar detector; my V1 was Stolen (Libyan bastards!)

Isn't there a HUD like this in the Vette or one of the exotics already in use? Seems to me I remember this being introduced last year or maybe a couple of years ago. I do remember that Jerry Weigert had the HUD in his Vector W2 back in the late 1980's, too!
