????????...A reply I got in another forum:

BOV = loud and screws with our car's a/f ratio
DV = quieter, designed for our cars, with a CAI you can hear it decently loud still

Seriously Covz....

This is a hotly discussed topic with noobies. The BOV is NOT the way to go.

Jesus Christ....I'll take this one.

The general consensus is that on the VAG 1.8T engine, a diverter valve (DV) is a better way to purge suddenly unneeded boost from the system while upshifting than a blow-off valve (BOV). A diverter valve simply reroutes the air back into the intake system, while a BOV, well, blows the unneeded boost into the atmosphere. For an Eclipse, or a turbo Civic, this approach is fine, and for super high-boost systems this approach is also fine, but for most Audi tuners, a diverter valve is a more elegant solution, because when the unused boost is diverted back into the system rather than blown off, the sophisticated Audi ECU isn't freaking out trying to compensate for the sudden change in the fuel/air ratio in the engine.

This is the best I can explain it, and the only explanation you are likely to get, because had you searched, you would have found thousands and thousands of threads that thoroughly beat this topic to death.
And if you are more concerned with the sound (rice factor) than the practicality and relative usefulness of a DV versus a BOV, then you should probably find a different forum, or better for you, a different car to modify, because none of the three major Audi forums (the Zine, the World and this one) has a big fanbase of this kind of modding approach.
