What is the difference between slotted and cross-drilled rotors?
what are the ups and downs of these rotors?
what do guys recomend?
can you have one type in the front and a different type in the rear?

Default RE: Brakes

Slotted rotors are designed to dissipate the high temp build up of gases between the rotor and the pad, these gases tend to reduce the friction coefficient (brake bite) by hardening and glazing the pad surface. Slotted rotors scrape the face off the pad thus creating a new biting surfacing, it also promotes even pad wear. This is very efficient but the downside is decreased pad life. Cross drilled rotors are also used to dissipate brake gases therefore decreasing the heat. But under extreme braking cross drilled rotors tend to crack due to the stress and heat. If your choosing cross drilled rotors make sure they are camfered, this increases the crack resistance. Typically if you don't have an high performance car and your not doing some form of racing then cross drilled and slotted rotors aren't necessary, they do look nice though.

what about rotors that are slotted and cross-drilled?
Is it OK to use slotted in the front and drilled in the back?

My car is mainly stock. i only have 3 inch test pipe, borla exh., and a K&N drop-in filter. The reason i want to learn about brakes is because i want to be able to STOP before i put any GO on my car.

Thanks 4 the input.

Some chinese rotors and a GOOD set of pads should be sufficient. Cross drilled tend to crack, slotted eat up pads...

It is fine to have both, its certainly not gonna hurt. You'll never be driving hard enough anyways. Quality manufactured rotors won't crack on you, brembo and zimmermans are good.

When I upgraded my rotors to slotted/dimpled I noticed a big improvement in stopping power, this gave me a better peace of mind. Now I only worry about the A..hole that's tailgating me.

i dont know how you would notice a difference between crossdrilled or solid rotors on the street. but yea unless u plan on tracking the car, oem rotors and some decent pads should be sufficient... i just did my brakes last weekend, solid brembo rotors and PGR pads all around. cheaper, reliable and more efficient for me since my b5 is just a daily driver

I have a 2000 A4 Quatro and need to do my brakes also. I need pads and rotors, and was considering the Brembo solid rotors. Can you tell me how hard this was to do? I am a serious novis mechanic. My father in law is going to help me which is good, but he wanted to know if the rotors were pressed on. I'm not sure if they are or not or if that is good or bad. Can you lend some insight to me on this process. Any hints or tips or things to what out for.

if you dont have the power to go fast whats the point in stopping fast?

if you want to get something that looks nice go just drilled.

not to expensive not the best but still sure quality depending on what brand you go with

Brembo being the best by far

Rotora has some products also

In most cases when you buy a kit it comes with Hawk brake pads or Axxis
