only a failed cat makes this smell but are you sure thats the smell you have ( any fault codes CELL )

Is it possible for the clutch to smell over a week if you slightly burned it?
I had my cat checked today and it's fine, the smell is coming from the front. No engine lights or fault codes.

Yeah both chaos and techbod could be correct here, if you have a 2002 A4 then there is a TSB for the rear crank case hose to be replaced from a faulty design, and if thats ok and you still have a rotten egg smell then its the cat converter for sure. They smell like rottenegg shoved up someone *** for a year when they go.

 

Rotten egg= cat...a black cat.

 

Maybe a rat crawled up into your belt right as you turned the car on,
