Buying Audi - need advice
Hiya. Saw some competent folks and clever opinions around, so I hope you could sort my dilemma.
I kinda don't feel attracted to rice cookers and going for my only love - Audi, so I did a quick run through the market... Two cars:
- A4 1998, 1.8 for $3250 BUT interior in terrible condition, front windscreen cracked - needs changing, all four tires need replacing,
100k miles on the odometer, owner's a pig (oh, the poor car), AC blows hot air, seats are all in coffee-and-whatever-imaginable spots... But the engine is smoooth and running without any glitches.
- A6 1998, 2.4L (been bought Sep'99), $8700 in almost perfect condition - body and interior. The trouble's with the engine, doesn't sound reliably - low RPM at start close to choke, but odometer at 44k miles, driven by some chick...
I know I have to run'em both to the mechanic, but the question's which one would you recommend based on the info above... the scruffy one that needs a LOT of work but is an open book and you can mod and mod... or the A6 that looks like you can't touch anything... and nice and shiney... but costs 2.5 times more.
Appreciate any comments :-)

OMG go for the 98 A4for 3250 you can fix all that stuff for cheap buy a new windshield around $300 get the A/C system checked out ushally nothing major and send it to a professional detailing shop to get all cleaned up that sounds like the best deal i've heard so far for one for the difference in price you can fix alot of stuff
There's the A4, 2000, 55k miles, leather seats, sunroof, blah blah for $9500
An A4, 2.4, 1998, leather interior, FSH, $7000
Haven't looked at these two, because the owners live quite far... Have to pay'em a visit some time during the weekend.
The rest are outta my league for now :-( (lots of 2002,2003,2004 et al models available all rounding well over $10k)
Thanks :-)

Was wondering about the 2.4 engine, It was never offered in the US. If you are looking for a good project car go for the A4. It could turn out to be a pain in the butt. If he treated the inside bad, then I doubt the guy was good to the engine.
Well, the good news is he had it only for 17k miles. The previous owner was a decent guy and he had regular check-ups with the official Audi workshop - all registered in the logbook and stamped, so up to a certain extent the car's engine has been maintained. The new 'owner' has to leave the country quickly so he's passing this one as a "it's a dirt-cheap-hot-deal cuz I'm leaving real quick"-thing. The car was dirty and everything when I saw it... The A6 was all pimped down for sale. That's what I didn't like much. And I got only $400 off the sale price after half an hour bargaining. [:-]
