Default Buying b5 98 1.8TQ

I am in the process of buying a 1998 B5 A4 1.8L MTXturbo with quattro. I looked around at the car and did a small test drive. Everything seems alright, I would give this car a "fair" rating. Little things like a button, ashtray, and ceter hub cover are broken off. The A/C control panel is funky and even though you see as you adjust things, no air comes in. but it does work because there was water dripping from underneath after the test drive. The car has 112,000 on the odometer. Under the hood has been cleaned and such. Turbo spools well and tranny shifts smooth. though when i checked the oil it was very very dark. Now on to the question.

What are all the things I should check before buying this Audi? Since this is a tiny used dealer, I can pretty much do whatever to check. I am going to be using this as a daily driver so I dont want it to fail after two days on the road after I buy it.

thanks for reading.

I'm also looking for a B5 A4, how much are you paying for this one?

He is asking $6500 for it. I will ask about the timing belt and will do a complete lookover on Saturday. I am actually planning on trading a 2000 Chrysler LHS for it or maybe trade and he gives me the difference in money because the LHS only has 40,000 and is worth more than $6500.

I wouldn't purchase the car.... why would a person want to trade you straight up? and pay you extra....There are other deals out there to be had.....

This is just me but i would buy a newer Audi with less miles on it and get your full amount from the car you might trade in. You can find some nice Audis that have been taken car of out there, all you have to do is look.

don't just believe him that the timing belt has been done - when I talked with a couple mechanics they said to make sure its documented that it was done (paperwork from the dealer/shop where it was done). otherwise everyone would say its been done - mine has a sticker under the hood saying it was replaced at 70k.

Good luck
I paid $5300 for a 98.5 1.8t - 1/06 with 130k

I wouldn't buy it.

The fair condition shows it was not well taken care of. That is murder for this vehicle. Unless the dealer can provide acurate service records, you likely are buying a big problem.

Pass, keep looking for a clean one with service records. It makes all the difference for this car.
