Buying a B5 Quattro, need some help
Theres a nice black 5 speed 98 A4 Quattro 2.8 I found for sale, only problem is that its at a shady used dealer, so I'm gonna be doing everything possible to find out if this car is a lemon (carfax and ICBC history checks, full inspection from a mechanic of MY choice etc etc) and I was just wondering what other kind of stuff I should thoroughly look over while I'm checking the car. Thought it'd be best to ask a group of Audi enthusiasts

usually those shady dealerships are where you get the best cars at the best prices. The only time I have bought a car was either from a shady dealership or private party. I even drove to cali to pick up my 2001 2.8 from a shady dealership...
oh ya, there not "shady" dealerships, lol, there wholesale dealerships, meaning they buy cars that are too old to go on a "big non shady" dealerships lot from a private auction for a dirt cheap price, and they turn around and sell it at wholesale, and since they sell the cars so dam cheap they usually sell very fast and both the buyer and the seller are thrilled.
Go take a peak, I have had nothing but good experience from little wholesale dealers. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

just be sure your mechanic KNOWS audi's. Make sure it is actually a quattro. One guy on here just bought one thought it was a quattro because it had all of the badges and then found out it wasn't. Good Luck with the purchase.
Nono, these dealers around here are actual shady dealers. On another forum I'm apart of, people have been lied to, sold complete garbage cars, and after many attempts to get them to fix them / resolve the issue etc they still screw them over. Heres the ad in case you guys wanted to see it (remember its in canadian dollars)

looks nice.... just go take it for a LOOOOOOOONG test drive... im talking a solid 30 minutes. turn it off, turn it back on, turn the AC on, let it sit in idle while its on... buyinga used car is all up the consumer as to whether they get a nice car or not.
Just inspect the crap outta the car and everything should be cool.

dont but it with out hooking up a code reader. I would be worried becuase it has an aftermarket deck. It is common for professional installers to mistake the power wire with the K wire. the K wire allow you to communicate with your car, in wich case you will not be able to read any codes your car does throw. I am not sure how to test it other than make it throw a code and see if you scanner can find it. Now the scary part is if the wire is cut it wrill fry your scanner. So long story short I would not recomend buying this car with out haveing the radio pulled or just look for one with the stock radio.

dude i have had multipal aftermarket decks put in 2 different audis and never has anything like that happened...
i have never even heard of this happening. Dont let that post be the reason you dont buy the car. It even comes with an aftermarket grille, and some cheap o looking clear corners, but still, its better than amber corners.
I would be careful....I bought a 86 camaro from one of those shady lots and after I took it home, I gave it an oil change and the oil that came out was super thick and heavy. As soon as I put some 10w 30 in, I heard a loud knock. Next thing ya know....new engine in 8000 miles. In the end, I was able to help drop the engine in and that was a great learning experience.
Hire a mechanic to do 1 of those 100+ point inspections. Also deff. get the car read for codes. But if you know this dealer is a scam then just keep looking. No point in setting yourself up for future problems.
If you do decide this is the car for you then use the aftermarket things (grill & HU) as a tool to drop the price.
