Default A/C = huge turbo lag?

So, the other day it was seemingly a million degrees, and I had picked up my mom since her van was getting some work done on it. Well, she wanted to cool off so I put on the a/c for the first time since I got the car. I'm not a huge fan of a/c, I enjoy the heat but anyway, as soon as the compressor engaged, my engine felt like I had no turbo at all. It seriously had no power at all, slow revving in even the lower gears, and the engine felt like it was bogging all the way up to about 2k. As soon as I shut it off, I was fine. Any ideas at all, or should I just not use it? Like I said, I don't like using the a/c at all, but I do like fixing/doing stuff. How about a huge pully on it to underdrive it or something... dunno...

Hmm... never heard of someone having that big of an issue while using their ac... If I were you i'd check the tension of the pulley to make sure it's right... I don't believe you should be having those issues and it leads me to believe you shouldn't need a performance pulley but rather look at your car itself to figure out why it's behaiving differently than all the other 1.8t's on here...

You engine is rated at 150 hp. Maybe getting it chipped would
add torque below 2000rpm.

Its how it goes. Fast in the winter/spring/fall. Dog slow in the summer, and snail slow in the summer w/AC on. Heat soak is a bitch. Welcome to turbo land. A chip would definately help out though.

that's why if I have no one with me, I always want to enjoy hot weather for extra some horses.

It makes difference with/out ac

Its only common sense that the more load on the engine the less power you have to the rear wheels. The Air Conditioner compresser takes up to 10 horsepower to run it and that is a fact. Myself, I hate the heat and the AC doesn't bother the 2.8 all that much.

Good Luck...

Yup I remember findning this out for the first time. But yeah AC is an HP robber and if at all possible I never turn it on.

I actually don't notice it all that much. What makes a bigger difference is the actual heat itself. When it's hot outside, i seem to lose power - whether the a/c is on or not.

It does take hp but it shouldn't be bogging him down that freaken much...

To add to your original question...and please correct me if I reply wrong, I am new to the forum-

I too, just turned on my a/c for the first time the other day. I have an '01 A4 1.8T. It was okay when I was driving, but once I stopped, my rpm's dropped to 650 and teetered quickly going up to around 800 and back to 600 or so, for like 15 seconds, then jumped back to its resting rpm at around 850-900. Any ideas?
