Default A/C on the fritz!

Hey guys, having some fun times with my A/C. I just took my ride out for a drive today after letting it sit for about a week and I noticed my A/C wasn't blowing cold air. In fact..it wasn't even on at all. So I flicked the little snowflake button off and then back on to see what was up. The fan sound changed like it always does but it started blowing hot air and after about 5-10 seconds shut off. I tried toggling the snowflake a few more times and the same result happened each time. Any ideas on what's up?

98.5 A4 Quattro Manual for those that can't read signatures [8D]

Thanks,

Does the fan work if you put it on heat? If not ...fan problem.

OPut the AC on full blast and check the hoses going through the firewall in the engine compartment. Is one of them cold, if not, you may need a charge. Does your AC compressor clutch engage.

Thanks for the info, I'll do a check tomorrow for the cold hose.

..how do I know if the AC compressor clutch engages or not? I'm not familiar with this lingo.

thanks again..updates to come shortly!

Look down on the passenger side in front of the engine compartment. Have someone turn on and off the A/C by pressing the ECON button. If the low side pressure is below 18 pounds/square inch the clutch will not engage. Add a can of R134A to the low pressure port.

When it engages, you will hear a clunk and the engine will slow down a bit.

Go to PEPboys and buy a Haynes Manual for 15 dollars which has basic info that helps for minor repairs and will at least identify engine parts for you.

If the clutch engages but no cold air is coming, check with a VAGCOM in the HVAC to see if there are any codes.

Check the fuse in the fuse box

There is a secondary electric fan behind the radiator. If your AC urns on and your car is standing still, this should come on soon (assuming your car is warmed up). If the fan doesn't come on, your AC will not blow cold when you come to a stop, but should be OK at speed.
