Hi All

I have 2000 A4 1.8 T Quattro. It's been a while the car been starting with rough, loud noise which takes a couple mins to goes away & in the winter it's even louder coming behind the engine next to the cam chain tensioner. I was told that the Cam Chain tensioner needed to be changed so I went to the stealership & drop $200 on parts yeah I know I feel very stupid when I could it save a lot from ESC, but anyway since I spent that much on parts I'm been thinking do I need to pay my mechanic another $300 to replace the parts for me or I can do the job myself. I was told not to do it because there a time limit to switch the parts & doing it wrong may cause major damage on the engine. But other people have told me exactly what to do. So now I'm confused & worried on what to do. I need from anyone who did this job before a link with pics would be great to see what exactly to do. The parts I have to change is behind the engine I have get the valve cover gasket off to get to it and it's the cam chain tensioner. By the way I have change my oil before no major mechanic work.

if all you've done is change you oil I wouldn't attempt it. I know its tempting but odds are you are going to mess something up and end up paying more to fix it later. if you have good german mechanic then let him do it.

I agree with smokeU. Sometimes you have to let the techs be techs. Plus you have torque specs on every nut and bolt. Unless you have exact procedure from alldata or similar source, I wouldnt recommend it. Plus you get the peace of mind that a professional did it and you didnt miss anything.
