When I start my car sometimes It smells like exhaust right around the car - more towards the engine. I got down on my knees(ok belly) and saw this, so I took some pics - might this be the problem?



Also when I was down their taking pictures I saw this. Any Ideas? oh yeah don't worry about the oil had my oil changed a few times ago and they forgot the thrust washer constant leak for about 8000 they missed it the second time too third times the charm I guess - haven't had it cleaned yet

Yes your exhaust is leaking there but may also be leaking elsewhere. In the second set of pictures what exactly are you wondering?

 

I just replaced two of those flex pipes. I don't know what the second set of pics is but the first is a fairly inexpensive fix as long as they weld new pipes in.

 

If your asking about the bent piece of metal it is a bracket for the plastic belly pan. What year is the your a4 I'll sell mine if you want one.

 

ok - that is what i was figuring the bent metal was for. Its a 98. Do I need a belly pan ? What purpose does it have? Will it hurt anything if I don't replace it?

No. People try to tell me it helps with wind under the car but I don't think so. That's why I took mine off.
