Default Car broke down!

I was on my way to work yesterday, and my car started hesitating on the freeway. I thought I was runnin out of gas at first, because I was gettin down there. I pulled off the freeway, and the car started running really rough, and I got a flashing cel and a weird smell. I popped the hood and everything looked fine, and no fluids were leaking or anything. So now its sittin in a parking lot over the weekend, and I'm gonna have it towed to the shop tomorrow morning. Anybody have any ideas? I'm kind of worried. I just hope its somethin small.

Ah, welcome to the world of toasted coilpacks!

You're lucky though, they usually go one at a time, and they are like 30 bucks.

Do you have a vag-com? You can fix this for 30 bucks, just buy one coil, and play musical coils until the problem is fixed.

Well that would be a relief. Would it be bad to drive the car a couple miles, or should I have it towed? Will a vag com tell you which coil pack is bad?

A vag-com will tell you which coil is bad. And yes, I would refrain from driving it... but it is a very simple thing to change... You need a screwdriver to get the engine cover off... and a 5 mm allen key (I believe) to get the coilpack out. The new coilpacks do not bolt in, they just push in.

I honestly... would just buy a coilpack, and put it in. OR, for the cost of the tow, and teh diagnostic... I would buy 4 coilpacks, and replace them all. Easy as bloody pie.

From the sounds of it, this is surely a coilpack issue... But, I would hate for you to change them all and it not fix the problem. But yeah... I am 99% sure that is your problem. I am sure somebody here will confirm.

Yeah I guess I could just buy a coilpack , and try replacing each one until it runs right. A guy on the zine is telling me that its the ignition control module. Hopefully it is a coilpack though becuase that would be an easy fix, and I wouldn't have to have it towed and what not.

Yeah, It could be the ICM as well... who bloody knows. Coils drop in these cars like flies though... I would at least try the musical coils thing and see how it goes! If it doesn't fix it... you can bet on needing the coil sometime in the near future anyways! :P

My dad is going to get a coil to keep in the car from now on, haha!

Thanks man. Right now I'm lookin for someone w/ a vag com on my local Audi website. If not I can get it towed for free I think, and my local shop will vag it for me for free, but I'd rather not go through all that hassle if I can figure it out myself. I may just stop by the dealer after my class tomorrow, and buy a coilpack.

You're right I think I might just play the musical coil pack. It wouldn't hurt anything.
