wanna do the fuel filter replacement.. where is the filter on a 96 audi quattro ? its not IN the tank is it?

I helped my dad change the fuel filter on his 96... it was a MAJOR PITA. I cant remember WHY... something tells me that something went very wrong... but it was effin a long time to get it done! 4 - 6 hours if my memory serves me right.
