Got a 96 A4 quatro, we were checking with the headlights because one went out. Went to start the car and nothing. The power windows, stereo system, alarm system, and everything still work. It flashes in 2nd under the mileage like it's stuck in 2nd. Of coarse a car is not going to start if it thinks it's in 2nd, but it cant be the tranny out, because I had had it on the interstate earlier that day up to around 90. Let me know what you guys think it could be.

 

Turn the key? Haha, jk. Try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes and see if your computer resets.

 

Tried reseting the battery earlier today didn't work? And I turned the key of coarse

 

Did you ask really hard? Try turning the key till the wheel and shifter unlock, put it in neutral, and then try to start it.

 

Hey, yes I tried really hard. I tried jumping it off, I tried everything. The stearing wheel isn't locked. Just the power steering is off and brake booster is off. I got it in park but it still flashes 2nd.

 

does it sound like it wants to turn over or are you just getting nothing?

 

Are you sure your battery is ok? Did you check for any blown fuses?
Try jump starting?
Is it turning over?
Have you tried push starting it and dropping it in to 2nd gear? Auto or manual?

 

I didn't try push starting. (Automatic.) I tried jump starting and got nothing. Honestly when you try and turn it over you get nothing. I really dont think it tries to do anything, you can hear the starter click every now and then. I thought it was the starter, but why would it be showing the car is in 2nd gear, when it's in drive or park? Thus is why I think its a sensor in the tranny.

Dead battery, how old is it?

if the starter is clicking occasionaly, that tells me your battery is probably gone. The weird electrical sh*t is probably due to the dead battery.
