CD changer control question

CD changer control question
My 98 A4 came without the CD changer. I bought last week an iPod2car interface by Peripheral and I hooked it up to the CD changer cable (13 pin) in the trunk. The iPod would power up but when I try to switch from radio to the iPod the head unit doesn't see it. I can switch from radio mode to tape mode but not to CD mode wich now would be the iPod
As I said the car did not have the CD changer. Is the CD changer cable active or you need to do something else before hooking up a device to it? Any ideas for my problem?
