air pump is bad. Man sorry to hear about your luck with the car so far [:@]. Nothing extremely important to worry about though. It only serves its purpose on a cold start to help emissions until the 02 sensors warm up and take over. It's like a $300 part, and I do believe there is a way to trick the ecu into thinking its ok with vag com. Search on audiworld and zine for the procedure. If your air pump is bad, you must hear a real annying noise at startup for about 1 minute? Could also be the hoses that come from the pump to the head are leaking.. But the air pumps usually die before the hoses go bad from what i know. Mine is noisy at start up, it just hasnt died or given me a cel... yet.

I dont know if youd pass emissions... Depends on if they hook up to the OBD and scan for codes... If they see that code it may not. But i dont know how they would even know what the 2ndary air injection pump does or how it affects emmisions. A CEL is cause for them to be concerned though for sure. He probably had to have it relocated because of the intercooler or turbo plumbing. It sits to the left of the radiator by the horn etc.

He knew the pump had issues before the car was purchased.

I dont think its the pump. I think the hoses are either kinked or brittle and not making enough "flow" to the head.

I put my hand in front of the pump when it was blwoing and it was moving a good volume of air, even though the pump is noisy. I think its engine computer block 44 to test and cycle the pump for troubleshotting purposes.

Pull the front bumper and check the hoses coming off the pump. The pump was "relocated" but it is essentially sitting in the same spot as OEM. You can see all of the hoses once the bumper is removed.

That damn thing has always been a pain in my ***.
