Default clicking from engine

I have had a loud clicking noise coming from under my hood for a week or two now during idle. Its a very loud constant clicking that only goes away when i start moving and continues during idle until i turn the car off. I cant really locate the sound, which is why im not really sure what it is. Let me know if you know anything. Thanks

Have you done your Timing belt/tensioner yet?? Could be the tensioner on its way out. Better get that checked asap.. Or it could be your cam tensioner on the opposite side on the engine on top under the valve cover.. Or it could be a failing oil pump. If you havent done your timing belt better do that asap. If it is still there, do an engine flush. But if you could pinpoint where the clicking is coming from that would help too. It could be several things... Best to pinpoint exactly where its coming from first.

Car stethoscope or long screw driver up to your ear can help you find the area where the noise is.

i have the same problem but my sound is coming from the area around the oil dipstick when the car idles, and when i acelerate and let off the pedal i hear a horrible clicking/ratttling noise coming from the cat area, actually sounds like the noise is coming from inside the cat and i have been getting an error reading for P0422 could hte cat be the problem? car is a 99 A4 1.8TQ 100k on it by the way.

I had that problem on my 2001 A4 1.8 and it turned out to be cam shaft tensioner. It was an $1800 fix from the dealer. You could probably do that for less than $700.
