Default clutch or transmission problem?

well today i was driving home since i got my car chipped and wanted a lil fun i shifted around low 4000. and suddenly my clutch goes half way down and i gased and all it did was rev. so i jus tried to put it in neutral and every thing went back to normal. after all i smell was something burning. not the kind of smell that a clutch makes but from a motor. so i got home popped my hood and sniffed where the smell was coming from and it was coming from near the coolant resovoir side. i don't know wut happend all i kno is that its soemthing with the tranny. so help i need to know wuts goin on
