Default Code 00281 00652

Anyone had the problem with these two codes? I have replaced the speed sensor but keep coming up with the same two codes.
The car starts off in second gear and will not change into 3rd until 4000rpm. I feel like giving up on this car![&o]

Wife can only drive a auto so had to buy her one. I had a new speed sensor fitted and it worked fine for a few miles. Sometimes its ok for a day or so but now its just playing up again and after the weekend its make of break for the car. Its a 97 1.8 auto. I will have to find the sensor cabling and try to test but maybe better just to scrap the car for bits and walk away from Audi.

as its auto ( I love them ) the VSS is the crank sensor and the engine wouldn't start at all if it were at fault

I have had a look at the manual and it says the speed sensor is behind the oil filter. Is there any sensors on the gearbox that can cause the shifting problem and thanks guys for the replys so far.

Dave, Looking in my Haynes manual now and it say the engine speed sensor is located at the rear left hand side of the engine just behind the oil filter and retained by one bolt. i have bought a manual and even the code reader reset tool. I have also replaced the road speed sensor on the gearbox.
