Default connecting the battery

I just have a quick question....I'm about to replace the turn signal relay but I was wondering if I absolutely have to disconnect the negative cable from the battery. If i do, than is there anything else besides the radio lock up that i need to know about, or is unlocking the radio all i need to do after i reconnect the ground? I have a 2001 A4 1.8T

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a new feature on the 2002 and up model A4's, a "Battery Backup" was installed. I've disconnected both the positive and negative lead's of my battery several times for mis. things, and have never had to input the radio code.

Do the older models not have this?
