considering picking up an a4 as a daily driver. advice?
if i was to get one, it'd be a 5 speed 1.8t quattro. i don't really have that much money to spend (maybe around 6k?). is it possible to get a decently reliable b5 for that price or am i just dreaming? are there years to avoid? i am handy with cars and i know how to wrench so i will do my own labor. i've already got a project car (porsche 944 s2 cabriolet) and i really need something that will get me to and from school everyday. after the porsche is done, i will probably start modding the a4 as the modding bug always gets to me (and i'm sure it will be especially bad with a turbo car) i saw a post in the classifieds about someone selling a car that needs a tranny. how much would it cost to pick up a tranny for a 98 and how hard is the job to put it in? i've never worked on awd cars before so i don't know what i'd be getting myself into
what advice can you guys give to someone who's looking to become an owner? thanks in advance

that car that needed a tranny was being offered for 4.5k. could i get another tranny (and clutch while i'm in there) and come out ahead? i know the prices for parts for my 944 as i know that car very well but here i'm brand new. could i get a clutch/tranny for 1.5k and have a reliable car? do trannies come up alot around here?

OK i guess ill chime in here. Hear. There? Anyways what about general maintenance. Are there engine parts IE time belt, chain that need to be replaced at any certain intervals? Anything on the AWD system that needs to be replaced as general as preventative maintenance. IM pretty new here having tooled on a 1.8t of my buddies but its only front wheel. And its brand new so not much to tool on. But just any general information.

timing belt/water pump/idle pullies/tensioner needs to be changed around 70k miles. There really isnt any maintenance on the drivetrain except maybe a tranny flush.
