coolant temp sensor
So in the quest to find out y on earth my car keeps saying it is running lean, i got a new coolant temp sensor in the hope that by some miracle, that is is. Now...anyone want to direct me to where this is on the engine so i can replace it?
I think I have a bad CTS because my coolant temp gague is crazy sometimes. I do have some problems starting up, and bouncing RPMs at idle...almost like its bad spark plugs, but its not. I'm going to change mine as soon as I get the part and see if that fixes it.
I had the erratic gauge problem too. It's a real simple DIY, much easier on the 1.8T though.

grrr, so i looked at that DIY and got happy that it was so easy. went out to my car and looked at the engine bay and WOW. i am guessing that pic was taken on a pre '01 audi becuase where my coolant temp sensor is compleetly blocked by wired and some shiny metal things...
mine was the same way. the diy looked much easier than it was, but it's still easy with the right tool. i can change it out pretty quickly now. if you can find something long and skinny (insert joke here) to stick inbetween the clip and the sensor you'll have no problems.. otherwise good luck reaching down there, it was a pain in the *** even with a long screw driver. the diy i read said you can even use just your hands.. thats not the case with my engine bay unless you've got pencil thin fingers.
what i ended up using was a long cooking fork type deal, about 2 feet long, and very slim, worked perfectly. something like a butter knife but longer.. and maybe skinner, to give you an idea on what a good tool would be. i'm not exactly sober, so hopefully this is making sense. whatever you use, you want to stick it inbetween the clip and the sensor.. and tilt the top of the tool towards you, so the bottom of the tool moves away from the sensor and pulls the clip out. make sure you have your hand there to make sure the clip doesn't fall.
if you need any help, feel free to pm me, but it should be pretty easy to figure out after a while.
by the way, i did have to move some of those cables/wires to make slightly more room, i can probably do it without moving anything now, but it definitely helps.
i sure as hell typed a lot, to say pretty much nothing.

Mines blocked and far down too.I have an 01, and mine looks much harder than the DIY. The DIY says you can do it in 3-5 mins.
I'm going to try it tomorrow when its warm out..
